English yew is the classic dark evergreen used for topiary and long‑lived hedges. Slow‑growing to 15 m, tolerant of deep shade, lime soils and drastic pruning. Female plants bear red arils enclosing seeds. Hardy to −25 °C. Clip in August for formal faces; all parts except aril flesh are poisonous.
