SYRINGA vulgaris

Common lilac is a beloved 4 m shrub producing heavily scented panicles of lilac, white or purple in May. Best in full sun, alkaline to neutral soil. Suckers freely; remove unwanted shoots. After bloom, prune out spent flower trusses and some old stems to keep vigorous. Hardy to −35 °C, attracting butterflies and nostalgic memories.
