SCIADOPITYS verticillata

Japanese umbrella pine is an ancient conifer 10 m with unique whorls of thick, glossy needles forming umbrella spokes around stems. Slow‑growing and perfectly conical, it demands acidic, moist but drained soil and protection from hot sun. Hardy to −25 °C. Avoid pruning; its sculptural symmetry shines in specimen plantings and containers while young.
