ACER japonicum

The full‑moon maple is a graceful small tree (to 8–10 m) distinguished by its broad, rounded leaves with 9–13 lobes that glow fiery red and orange in autumn. Purple‑red flowers appear before the leaves in spring, followed by paired winged seeds. Preferring partial shade, moist but well‑drained acidic soil and shelter from drying winds, it is hardy to –25 °C and provides superb specimen interest in woodland gardens.
