MAHONIA aquifolium

Oregon grape is a suckering evergreen 1.5 m with holly‑like glossy leaves that bronze in winter. Spikes of bright yellow, honey‑scented flowers in early spring are followed by blue‑black berries used for jam. Thrives in shade, poor soil and drought once established; hardy to −25 °C and deer‑resistant. Minimal pruning—remove oldest stems after fruiting to renew.
