FRAXINUS excelsior

Common ash is a lofty native tree 30 m with arched, domed crowns and pinnate leaves that turn buttery yellow before early leaf drop. Clusters of winged keys hang into winter. Its tough, elastic timber is prized, though the species now faces threats from ash dieback; resistant cultivars are emerging. Grows swiftly on deep, moist soils, tolerates pruning and coppicing, and supports rich woodland ecosystems.
