Eurya japonica is an elegant, glossy‑leaved evergreen 2–3 m related to camellias. New shoots flush bronze, and tiny fragrant flowers appear in late winter, followed by black berries. It clips well into cloud or hedge shapes and excels in shady, acidic, moist but drained soil. Hardy to −10 °C; shelter from dry winter winds. Mulch annually with leaf mould for best sheen.
