Winged spindle is a large shrub/small tree 3–4 m known for fiery crimson autumn colour. Corky “wings” on stems add winter texture, while inconspicuous spring flowers lead to pink seed capsules that open to reveal orange seeds loved by birds. Easy in sun or light shade and any well‑drained soil, it tolerates urban pollution and drought once established, hardy to −30 °C. Use as a dramatic specimen or hedge for seasonal spectacle.
