CORYLUS avellana

Common hazel is a multi‑stemmed shrub or small tree 4–6 m, valued for its edible nuts and wildlife appeal. Golden male catkins dangle in late winter, providing early pollen, while female flowers mature into clusters of hazelnuts by late summer. Tolerant of shade, chalky soils and coppicing, it is often used in hedgerows or woodland gardens. Leaves turn yellow before leaf‑fall, and the dense thicket offers nesting for birds. Hardy to −30 °C and easy to grow.
